 SARAKONDRAI tree, scientifically known as Cassia fistula, is also called the Golden Shower tree or Indian Laburnum. It's a medium-sized, deciduous tree known for its beautiful bright yellow, cascading flower clusters that bloom during summer. The tree has a straight trunk, spreading branches, and an open crown. Its leaves are pinnate, with 3 to 8 pairs of leaflets, and the fruit is a long, cylindrical pod.

  • Size: Medium-sized, reaching 10-20 meters (33-66 feet) in height. 
  • Trunk: Straight trunk, up to 5 meters in height and 1 meter in diameter. 
  • Branches: Spreading branches that form an open crown. 
  • Bark: Pale grey, smooth, and slender when young, becoming dark brown and rough with age. 
  • Leaves: Deciduous, pinnate with 3-8 pairs of leaflets, each leaflet 7-21 cm (3-8 inches) long and 4-9 cm (1.5-3.5 inches) broad. 
  • Flowers: Showy, bright yellow, pentamerous, borne on drooping racemes 20-40 cm (8-16 inches) long. 
  • Fruit: Pendulous, cylindrical, indehiscent pod, up to 60-100 cm (24-39 inches) long. 
  • Seeds: Many seeds (25-100) within the pod, embedded in a black pulp when young.

    The pulp of the fruit, known for its rhein content, is used as a laxative and for supporting the digestive system.
